You are in
Our History

To understand how we have become what we are today it might be helpful to know something about our past.

The firm was founded in 1922 when John William Pickles established offices in Albion Street in Leeds and then in Selby. He was joined in 1924 by his younger brother, Thomas (Tommy) Edward Pickles who trained and qualified with the firm. John Pickles retired in 1956 by which time the Leeds office had been closed. Tommy Pickles retired in 1974 but remained active in the firm until his death in 1989.

Of the current Partners, Robert Pickles (son of Tommy) was admitted in 1964, David Pavey in 1974, David Ingall in 1979, Stephen Headley and Russell Smith in 1997 and Andrew Blakey in 1998.

Over the years, more staff were recruited but two of the earliest employees both completed over 50 years with the company. Ken Swann joined in 1928 and retired in 1978 and Jim Stokes joined as a boy secretary in 1934 at the age of 14, retiring in 1985. Though none of the current staff have served quite as long, many have been with us for 10 or 15 years and one or two considerably longer.
